The Town of Saugeen Shores is approving an additional $2.3 million in funding to upgrade and expand the Water Pollution Control Plant (WPCP).

Council approved the additional funding during a meeting on Monday.

The project aims to address the aging infrastructure of the current facility.

The project began in 2018 with an environmental assessment, which later led to recommendations on how to upgrade the plant for the next 30 years.

The $17.5 million project was included in the 2025 budget, but has grown to $19.8 million.

To cover the needed $2.3 million, Project Manager Colin Saunders says the Port Elgin Reservoir Generator project, which was budgeted at $1.3 million, is no longer considered an option for long-term planning.

Additionally, the project at the third Sewage Pump Station in Southampton, which aims to install a second main from the pump station to the Southampton WPCP at $1.1 million, has been deemed no longer necessary. However, $100,000 of this budget will be kept for needed pump station upgrades.

The town has applied to the Canadian Housing Infrastructure Fund for $13.8 million to help fund the WPCP project. No word has been received as of yet if the application has been successful.

Coun. Bud Halpin adds, “This is a lot of money, but if we want to be set up for the growth that we are expecting, we need this to happen, and we need to be prepared for the future. Our best decisions are long-term decisions so this is something I can really get behind and support.”
