The South Bruce Grey Health Centre (SBGHC) is entering into a new partnership to offer residency training.
The partnership with the Kincardine Family Health Organization (FHO) will support Western University’s Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry students starting July, 2026.
SBGHC President and CEO Nancy Shaw says Kincardine will host the residency program where the two resident physicians will complete two full years of medical training under the instruction of local doctors.
The training will include primary care, inpatient care, and emergency medicine. The resident physicians will also take part in additional surgery and obstetrical rotations at other SBGHC hospital sites.
Shaw hopes the new residency program will help in physician recruitment and retention.
“We are always looking for opportunities and how we can deliver care to our communities, and part of the opportunity with the residency program is that you are able to bring physicians who are completing their training to the area. With that, they have the opportunity to see what we do and the beautiful area around us. It’s an opportunity to participate in recruitment and retention of physicians and show them the work that is happening and that they would love to be apart of,” says Shaw.
She adds when any health organization supports a residency program, they do, historically, have the opportunity to get physicians familiar with the area and learn about the organization they are working with.
“We will continue to advocate for as many spaces we can support, but right now we are pleased with our two spaces and that is per year. Year one we can have two spaces, the next year we can have two spaces, so we can have as many as four residents at one time. We will continue to evaluate the program as we move forward and if there is opportunity to grow that, we will certainly be interested in it,” says Shaw.
