Grey Bruce Public Health is reminding everyone that it’s the time of year to get vaccinated against respiratory viruses.
Both the updated COVID-19 vaccine and this year’s influenza vaccine will be available through primary care providers and participating pharmacies starting October 27th.
Public health says that both respiratory viruses are already circulating around Grey-Bruce, with the first case of the flu for the season reported on September 23rd.
Both vaccines are being offered to high-risk and priority groups before being rolled out to the general public.
Adults and children six months of age and older should get their updated flu vaccine each fall, as the virus changes frequently. The shot takes two weeks to take full effective.
The updated COVID vaccine can also be received at the same appointment.
Grey Bruce Public Health will be holding a vaccine clinic for children under age 12 on November 21st from 10am – 2pm. Walk-in appointments are available.
Starting this year, seniors aged 75 and older will be able to receive an vaccine for Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) as well, which is funded publicly and available through the expanded RSV prevention program. The vaccine is also available for high-risk adults aged 60-74, who meet the eligibility criteria established by the Ontario Ministry of Health.
RSV infection is typically most severe in young babies and older adults.
