An Owen Sound woman is facing several charges after allegedly damaging property during a protest at a conference centre in London earlier this week.
London Police say they were called to reports of an active protest outside RBC Place at York and Wellington Streets at around 7:45 a.m. Tuesday morning. According to police, protesters were blocking the front entrance of the building, and barricading the parking garage with construction materials. Police say paint had also been thrown at staff members.
“One female suspect, wearing a mask, used a hammer to break electronic locks off of the building entrance, and she was identified to police,” London Police say in a media release. “When officers approached the suspect, she fled from police into the crowd of protesters. When officers advised her that she was under arrest, she resisted police.”
Police say the female suspect was identified as a 34-year-old Owen Sound woman. She was arrested and charged with mischief over $5,000, resist arrest, disguise with intent and conspiracy to commit an indictable offence.
“The damage to the building is estimated at approximately $32,000,” police say in a statement.
London Police are still appealing for tips to identify other protesters who attended the demonstration early Tuesday morning.
According to a London Free Press report, the gathering at RBC Place in downtown London that drew demonstrators was a defence industry conference.
The Owen Sound woman facing charges was released from custody. London Police say she is scheduled to appear in court in December in relation to the charges.
