Meaford is applying for provincial funding for a road resurfacing project along Sykes Street.
Council approved submitting an application to the Ministry of Transportation’s Connecting Links Program during a meeting on Monday.
The $45 million program helps municipalities pay the construction and repair costs for major roads, bridges and storm sewer projects.
A 2023 street scan found a section of Sykes Street in need of road resurfacing based on the condition of the pavement.
To help fund the $849,000 project to Sykes Street North and South between Ford Avenue, Meaford will be submitting an application to cover 90 per cent of the costs.
Director of Engineering Tori Perejmybida hopes the application will be successful.
“If we aren’t successful this time, we will relook at the project and resubmit for what we think we need on Sykes Street in following years. We weren’t successful in 2023 when we submitted last time for the work, but we were told it was a strong project,” says Perejmybida.
She adds the funding is typically awarded around the spring season.
“We would look obviously at getting the tender in that similar time period as soon as we find out so that we can secure a contractor and get going as soon as the good weather is available,” says Perejmybida.
Meaford aims to complete the work next year.
