The City of Owen Sound is celebrating the success of the first-ever Great Lakes Coastal Cleanup.
The city participated in the cleanup as part of World Rivers Day, which took place on Sunday.
Twenty-five volunteers cleaned up 1 km of shoreline, stretching from the city’s Wastewater Treatment Plant to the harbour wall, including a section along Kelso Beach.
Volunteers contributed a total of 46 hours, filling 17 bags of garbage and recycling and removing approximately 150 lbs (68 kg) of waste from the shoreline.
The volunteers included the Georgian Bay Folk Society’s Summerfolk team, who recruited people.
Miller Waste was able to donate a dumpster and provide refreshments.
The cleanup was coordinated by the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative.
It was also funded by the Ontario Ministry of Environment, Conservation, and Parks through the Great Lakes Local Action Fund.
The Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative is a multinational coalition of municipal and Indigenous government executives representing communities in the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River Region, who are working to promote economic prosperity in communities and protect fresh water for the benefit of current and future generations.
The Cities Initiative is working to lead the way in advancing the environmental, economic, and social health of the region by addressing issues that impact residents, and has more that 350 member communities.
