The Attack picked up a point, but came up short in the shootout.
Cole Davis tied the game with a power play goal with 3:39 remaining in the third period, then scored the lone goal of the shootout to lift the Windsor Spitfires to a 4-3 win over the Owen Sound Attack in Ontario Hockey League action Friday evening at WFCU Centre.
Beksultan Makysh and Jack Nesbitt also scored for Windsor (12-2-1), which won its second straight game.
Michael Dec, Pierce Mbuyi and Lenny Greenberg had the goals for the Attack (9-3-0-1).
The game was tied 1-1 after the first, and 2-2 after the second. The Attack took their first lead of the night past the midway mark of the third period.
Greenberg kept the puck in at the right point and then made a move around Ethan Garden, cutting towards the net and letting a low shot go. Joey Costanzo made the first save, but the rebound kicked back out in front to Greenberg and he put a backhand shot in to put the Attack in front 3-2 with 9:21 left in the third.
Windsor tied it with 3:39 remaining. Liam Greentree had the puck in the high slot, and then moved it to his right down low – where Davis quickly put it towards the net. Carter George got a piece of the puck, but it got through to tie the game 3-3.
The metal rang a couple of times behind Costanzo in the final couple minutes of regulation. Noah Roberts took a shot from the left board after an offensive zone faceoff win for the Attack. It beat Costanzo blocker-side, but rang off the iron and stayed out.
Then it was Tristan Delisle in the final minute, breaking up ice and then letting a wrist shot go as he entered the offensive zone that got past Costanzo but hit the crossbar and deflected away from the net.
Costanzo denied Nick Sykora, Dec and Mbuyi in the shootout.
Windsor opened the scoring in the game just over seven minutes after puck drop. It came in the final seconds of a power play. Andrew Robinson took a low shot from the left-point that Makysh got a stick on and deflected past the right pad of George.
The Attack would tie the game just over five minutes later. Elliot Arnett broke up a pass attempt in front of Owen Sound’s net and then sent the puck up ice, springing a 2-on-1. Sykora had the puck on the left wing and then saucered a perfect pass to Dec, who shot the puck by Costanzo’s glove to tie the game 1-1.
Windsor retook the lead early in the second period. Greentree had it in the offensive zone and then passed off to Nesbitt near the right faceoff dot. He beat George with a low shot. 2-1 Spitfires.
But the Attack would battle back. On a delayed penalty at 7:07 of the second, it looked like Owen Sound tied it. David Bedkowski took the puck into the offensive zone and passed to Dec, who fired a shot short-side past Costanzo
But the goal didn’t stand. There was no video review, but the officials came together and decided Windsor had established possession earlier in the play and it should have been whistled to stop play.
Still 2-1 Spitfires, but the Attack were now to the power play.
And they would score on another controversial play. A wild goal-mouth scramble ensued in front of Costanzo and the puck was batted towards the empty-net – until Spitfires defenceman Wyatt Kennedy saved the day by clearing it off the goal-line.
But, after the next whistle. A video review – and a determination it was a goal. Pierce Mbuyi got the credit, and the Attack had tied it 2-2.
Costanzo made 30 saves in the win, while George stopped 24 taking the loss. The Attack outshot the Spitfires 33-28 while going 1 for 2 on the power play; Windsor finished 2 for 5.
Owen Sound continues in three-game West Division road trip Saturday night against Saginaw Spirit. Game time is 7:05 p.m, the pregame show on Bear Radio begins at 6:35 p.m.
