There’s a public meeting this week about a proposed battery energy storage facility south of Port Elgin.
Neoen is starting a class environmental assessment for transmission facilities for the development of a battery project proposed just east of Highway 21 near Concession 2, about 6.5 km south of Port Elgin.
The company says on its website that Neoen Battery (formerly Tara Battery) is a 400 Megawatt / 1,600 MWh, 4-hour duration standalone battery energy storage project.
They say in May 2024, the project was awarded a 20-year contract by Ontario’s grid operator, the Independent Electricity System Operator, to help meet growing electricity demand by storing and supplying up to 400 MW of power for a 4-hour duration. Neoen plans to charge and discharge power to and from the high-voltage grid.
The meeting is set to take place Thursday, August 13th at the Powerlink building in Port Elgin. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and a presentation is scheduled for 6 p.m.
