Parks Canada is keeping the Cyprus Lake Campground at Bruce Peninsula National Park closed until October 31st.
The campground has been closed since August 28th due to a single bear that has grown unafraid of people, and is getting into garbage and food.
Back on September 2nd, Parks Canada spokesperson Fatima-Zohra Hamidi told Bayshore Broadcasting News in an email, “Despite extensive management measures, Parks Canada has observed repeated activity from a habituated bear within the campground area. While bears are present throughout the park as part of a healthy ecosystem, the current public safety concern is related to the behaviour of a specific individual bear in a high visitor-use area, rather than a general increase in bear numbers across the park.”
She added, “This specific bear has repeatedly accessed human food and other attractants, became food-conditioned, and demonstrated a significant loss of natural fear of people.”
They say in a statement, “Parks Canada will continue to assess bear activity and communicate with reservation holders and the public if further closures are needed.
Grotto parking reservations and day use areas remain open.”
They add, backcountry campers are required to park at Halfway Log Dump until further notice.
