Kincardine Council received an update on the proposed Bruce C expansion project.
Chad Richards, Senior Strategist at Bruce Power let council know that the company is in the midst of the federally-regulated impact assessment process.
“Our process is an integrated assessment process, which means that it is overseen by two federal agencies: the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada, they are the entity that oversees the Impact Assessment Act in Canada, and our process is integrate with the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission, because we are a new nuclear project.”
The project represents a significant potential growth in the municipality.
The Municipality’s 2026–27 work program is focused on key foundational assessments, including employment and commercial land needs, asset management, water and wastewater capacity, fire and emergency services, and municipal service optimization.
Bruce Power entered into community readiness funding agreements with Bruce County, Saugeen Shores, and Kincardine providing $6.2 million in funding to undertake infrastructure and readiness planning work.
“We’ve also undertaking and have completed a number of baseline monitoring reports, and that spans across many different disciplines throughout the impact assessment process,” he shared. “One of the key advantages to the Bruce Power site is the base of knowledge that we have and our existing monitoring programs that are already in place.”
Richards shared that one of the core core strategic advantages to exploring new nuclear at the Bruce Power site is to have that base knowledge, but it doesn’t mean they can breeze past the Tailored Impact Assessment Guidelines, which were set out by the two regulatory agencies.
On May 7th, the Government of Ontario announced its support to advance the next stage of pre-development work for the Bruce C Project by entering into a cost-sharing agreement with Bruce Power.
The Bruce C Impact Assessment includes a License to Prepare Site (LTPS) application. If granted, Bruce C could begin the Site Preparation phase of the Project.
