Over 200 people turned out for a ceremony in Saugeen Shores to mark the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
It was on the Zgaa-biig-ni-gan Bridge along Highway 21 in Southampton with the MP for Bruce-Huron Ben Lobb, Mayor of Saugeen Shores Luke Charbonneau, New Saugeen First Nations Chief Sonya Roote, and kids from GC Huston all in attendance.
“Today, on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we honour the Survivors of residential schools, remember the children who never returned home, and recognize the enduring strength of Indigenous families, communities, and cultures in the face of the profound and lasting impacts of residential schools,” says Luke Charbonneau. “We recognize that these impacts affect Indigenous peoples today. We all share a responsibility to learn from that history, acknowledge it, and work toward truth and reconciliation – which begins with each and every one of us.”
GC Huston was apart of why the bridge was named Zgaa-biig-ni-gan in 2018 and were also heavly involved in the ceremony this year.
The name, Zgaa-biig-ni-gan, mean “from one end to the other, we are connected”.
