On October 16, the day voting opened in Meaford, mayoral candidate Caryn Colman withdrew from a three-person race.
“I don’t want to split the vote,” says Colman. “Given the threat of TC Energy’s Ontario Pumped Storage project, this is an extremely urgent election for Meaford. I want to clear the deck for the constituents to have a simple choice about who they want for mayor.”
To promote her message, Colman set up a pop-up campaign headquarters at 4 Sykes St. in downtown Meaford, which includes an art exhibition celebrating Georgian Bay. The pop-up will remain open until October 28.
“It’s no secret green energy solutions bring more jobs for trades,” says Colman. “I want to empower people to get grants for heat pumps, retrofits and solar panels, to name a few. We’re not stuck with the destructive technology of an open-loop pumped storage system. We must protect our most valuable and precious resource, Georgian Bay and its waters.”
Colman’s name will still be on the ballot because she did not withdraw by the August 21 deadline, joining the other two mayoral candidates, Justin Perks and Shirley Keaveney.
“I feel proud that I met my objectives, and will always be grateful to all my supporters who rooted for me every step of the way,” says Colman.
Voting in Meaford runs from October 16 to October 26.
