Local communities are reacting to the deaths of four members of the Canadian Armed Forces, and the dozens who were injured in a fire at CFB Wainwright in Alberta by lowering their flags to half mast.
Georgian Bluffs, Owen Sound, and the Kemble Women’s Institute are lowering their flags for the week.
Owen Sound Mayor Ian Boddy says in a statement, “On behalf of Owen Sound City Council and our community, I offer my deepest condolences to all those impacted by this tragic circumstance. Our thoughts are with the families who have lost their loved ones, those who are injured, and the whole community of CFB Wainwright, along with the members across the Canadian Armed Forces during this difficult time.”
On Saturday, October 17th, a grass fire at the military base spread out of control in a change of wind direction and speed, suddenly traveling 1km in roughly one minute, to an area where a training exercise was taking place.
