There’s a big parking lot party coming up to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Royal Canadian Legion in Southampton.
Legion member and Past President John Willetts says it’s set to go Saturday, August 29th on Grosvenor Street in Southampton.
“We’re basically shutting down the street and the parking lot,” says Willetts who notes, There will be a colour guard and legion president’s opening remarks at 3 p.m.
There will be live music with an open mic at 3:30 p.m. hosted by Port Elgin Pete, where musicians are welcome to play. “Hopefulyl we’ll get some garage bands out of the garage and onto the stage,” says Willetts.
In the evening there is a live dance band, Grey Road 1 from 7p.m. to 10 p.m.
There will be a 50/50 raffle with the proceeds going to local youth sports.
The legion will be cooking up burgers, hot dogs and fries. It’s a licensed event, with drinks for sale.
Entry is by donation, and proceeds will go to youth soccer. The legion is contributing to fundraising efforts to light up the soccer fields at Helliwell Park. It’s something the Saugeen Shores United Football Club has been working with the Town on, to install soccer field lighting that will open up Helliwell Park in Southampton to more use. The town agreed to accelerate plans to light the field, at the football club’s request and with its fundraised contributions to the project.
