Kelso Beach at Nawash Park remains unsafe for swimming.
The most recent advisory was posted by Grey Bruce Pubic Health on August 27th, and remains in effect for the Labour Day long weekend.
The most recent water sample results showed that bacteria levels at the beach exceeds swimming guidelines from the Ontario Ministry of Health.
The most recent samples that still showed high bacteria levels were taken on Thursday, September 3rd.
New samples will be taken on Tuesday, September 8th.
Until advisory is lifted, it’s recommended to avoid swimming/bathing or playing in the water.
Senior Public Health Manager Andrew Barton said in a media release from Grey Bruce Public Health that it was likely heavy rainfall last week that led to the higher bacteria levels, and despite warm and sunny weather expected over the long weekend, the no swimming advisory will remain in place.
The organization also said that even when an advisory is not in place, it’s important to assess the water’s condition real-time and use your best judgement. GBPH recommends not swimming 24-48 hours following heavy rainfall, or if you can’t see your feet in waist-deep water.
Swimming in water with high bacterial levels can lead to irritation or infection of the skin, eyes, nose, ears, or throat, and can also cause gastrointestinal illness.
The City of Owen Sound advises that the splash pad at the part is not affected, since it is only connected to municipally-treated water. The washrooms and other potable water at the park is also still safe to use.
