Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound MPP Paul Vickers says that he’s disappointed in TC Transcontinental’s decision to shut down operations in Owen Sound.
The company announced on Wednesday that it would be winding down operations at its printing facility, which is a move that would leave 360 people out of work.
In a statement issued on Friday afternoon, Vickers says that the provincial government would always support workers and continue to provide the support necessary, as those affected would be looking for new careers, accessing training, and pursuing new opportunities.
Vickers pointed to resources for those now out of work, including the province’s Rapid Re-employment and Training Service (RRTS).
TC Transcontinental said in its announcement that it was as difficult decision to close down operations at the Owen Sound RBW Graphics plant, and that it had also retained a career services firm to help affected employees in Owen Sound transition to their next step.
The company is also providing other employment supports, counselling, and even looking at opportunities to relocate workers to other operations.
On Thursday, Owen Sound Mayor Ian Boddy said in a statement to Bayshore Broadcasting that the closure “… is pretty sad news. A company that’s been in the city for well over 100 years. A number of people, and families that have been employed there over the years, generations of people sometimes. We’re concerned about the people that work there and how this affects them.”
Vickers added that the Ontario government is continuing its work to invest in workers throughout the province, including support of the Skills Development Fund.
